History the EGGS

Gordon Watt and Rob Simpson started a Monday group in 1996. About twelve people played with starting times restricted by Vance Waters, the Golf Director. It was a "roll up" and draw for the players who came. The group was increased to sixteen after Mr. Waters left and Bruce Bain took over in late 1998. Only one monthly competition was run, an Individual Stableford was played on the first Monday of the month.

Things remained the same until Mike Kelly took over as EGGS Captain and increased the number of members to about thirty. Joining was still by invitation only. The proshop gave us eight starting times, four on the 1st tee and four on the 10th tee. This remains the situation today.

In 2001, Rob Simpson made and donated the EGGS Championship Trophy, which is played for every April. (In the picture above right, it is the trophy on the left.)

The first EGGS Tour took place in 2002, organised by Nick Cameron and Roy Pithey. We stayed in Robertson for one night and played two nine hole courses, Robertson and Sewllendam. Subsequent tours have taken us to Ceres, George, Saldanha, Plettenberg Bay, Caledon, Montagu and Citrusdal (See the Tours page for more detail).

In 2007 Robert Ficken donated the Tour trophy (third from the left in the picture above). The base was made by Ted Perkins and it is now presented at the After Tour Dinner each year.

The Chicken in the picture was donated by Martin Wickens and the magnificent "Egg Collection" was made and donated by Brian Pullen. There are thirty two eggs on it, each made from a different type of wood. We are very lucky to have two brilliant craftsmen in Ted and Brian in the EGGS. Ted also made the EGGS Board used for the draw each Monday.

Over the years, members showed a wish to have a competition every Monday. The type of competition is set by the Head EGG and ten rand per player is charged. The money is distributed to the winners and runners-up. Since 2007, an EGGS "Order of Merit" has been compiled resulting in the winner of the Order of Merit being the EGG who has won the most money during the calendar year.

In 2008, the EGGS golf shirt became available, with the logo designed by Bert Ibertson. Most EGGS have one and are encouraged to wear it on Mondays.
